Magazine Stand :: Nimrod – Spring/Summer 2024

Nimrod International Journal Spring/Summer 2024 issue is themed “Refuge.” What is refuge? How do we pursue or find it? The concept is rather abstract and wildly different for many people, and the authors within represent that very conundrum. Readers can explore fiction by Emily Giangiulio, Divya Maniar, Zen Ren, Catalina Infante Beovic, G.W. Currier, Mackenzie Majewski, Sarah Gerkensmeyer, and Conor Flannery, and poetry by Kelly Rowe, Bex Hainsworth, Rana Tahir, Lauren Tess, Nancy Eimers, Jody Winer, Hannah Baker Saltmarsh, Hannah Dierdorff, Kyo Lee, Sandra Crouch, Elizabeth Galoozis, M.K. Foster, Halee Kirkwood, Amara Tiebout, Geoffrey Babbitt, Eben Bein, Chelsea Dingman, Tiffany Mi, Zen Ren, Connie Braun, Eleanor Goodman, Maria Provenzano, Phillip Watts Brown, Mary Francesca Fontana, Jake Phillips, Caits Meissner, Angela Kirby, and many more.

Magazine Stand :: Nimrod – Spring/Summer 2023

Nimrod International Journal Spring Summer 2023 cover image

NImrod International Journal‘s Spring/Summer 2023 issue, Body Language, explores any and all ideas about the body. Indeed, this issue’s title may say “the body,” but the editors especially wished to acknowledge and embrace that there is no one body, that our bodies, the way we use them, and the way they feel, span an astonishing range of experience. Each of us lives in and as a particular body, and each of our bodies has its own stories to tell, and the stories told in these pages, whether as poems, creative nonfiction, or short fiction, demonstrate this idea with grace, wit, insight, honesty, and tenderness. Also in this issue, readers will find the winners and honorable mentions of the sixth Francine Ringold Awards for New Writers, which honor the work of talented emerging writers.

Themed Mag Issues

I enjoy a themed lit mag issue, and if you do too, here are some suggestions to pick up.

Rattle‘s issues always have a special section, and the Fall 2021 issue includes a Tribute to Indian Poets. Poets included are Tishani Doshi (who is also interviewed in the issue), Kinshuk Gupta, Zilka Joseph, Pankaj Khemka, Sophia Naz, and others.

The Summer 2021 issue of Nimrod International Journal brings us work that focuses on “Endings and Beginnings.” The editors promise “work that presents familiar beginnings and endings in new and compelling ways as well as work that illuminates smaller, unique kinds of endings and beginnings.” Angela Sucich, Sarah Carleton, Katie Culligan, and Bethany Shultz Hurst are a few who take on this task.

Every issue of THEMA is a themed issue. This time around for the Summer 2021 issue, writers and artists responded to the prompt “The Tiny Red Suitcase,” including Lynda Fox, Laura Ruth Loomis, James Penha, and Laura Blatt.

Nimrod International Journal – Spring/Summer 2018

While it’s not new to group “the arts” under a single umbrella of creativity, Nimrod expands this umbrella even further to consider the arts merged with diversity. Editor Eilis O’Neal breaks the poetry and fiction down into two categories: work about the arts (broadly speaking), and work by diverse artists (broadly speaking). There’s no division between these two categories within the table of contents or anywhere in the magazine, creating a seamless flow from piece to piece. Nimrod is expansively inclusive in what defines art and what defines diversity. This inclusivity aids in how welcoming the magazine is. Nimrod creates a place to gather and share stories.

Nimrod Literary Awards 2018

The Fall/Winter 2018 issue of Nimrod International Journal opens with Editor Eilis O’Neal reflecting on the publication’s 40th anniversary of awards. While there have been some changes, O’Neal asserts, “What hasn’t changed is that, from the beginning, the prizes have been awarded to writers from all corners of the country, writers of diverse backgrounds, and writers at many different stages of their writing careers, from authors with impressive publishing credits to writers appearing in print for their first time. And what really hasn’t changed is that, each year, the Awards bring us outstanding poetry and fiction. This year is no exception.”

Nimrod International Journal – Spring/Summer 2017

In this issue of Nimrod International Journal, the theme of “Leaving Home, Finding Home” pulled at my heart strings, reminding me of homes I have found and homes I have left. I spent days pouring over the pages of this journal, unwilling to set it down, each piece reaching out to me in happiness or in sadness, painting stories I could dive into.

Nimrod International Journal – Spring/Summer 2016

Nimrod International Journal has a history of devoting issues to underrepresented voices; Mirrors and Prisms continues this work, featuring only writers of marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities. But queer authors does not always mean queer subject matter. Editor Elis O’Neal states, “In this issue, you’ll find work on all subjects [ . . . ] we wanted to honor the breadth and depth of writing by our contributors, rather than limit their writing to a single aspect of their lives.” Nimrod takes a person-first approach to queer authorship.

Nimrod International LGBTQIA Issue

nimrod internationalMirrors & Prisms: Writers of Marginalized Orientations & Gender Identities is the title of Nimrod International‘s Spring/Summer 2016 issue. Editor Ellis O’Neal writes in the editor’s note:

Mirrors & Prisms feature the work of writers who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or asexual, or anywhere under the umbrella term MOGAI (marginalized orientations, gender identities, and intersex). While Nimrod has always published the work of such authors (and indeed James Land Jones, Nimrod”s founder, was himself gay and fought for gay rights in Georgia in the 1970s as a professor of literature), we have never before devoted an entire issue to LGBTQIA writers. To do so now, we believe, is not only to continue Nimrod‘s tradition of bringing less-heard writers to the literary forefront, but to make clear what Nimrod has always known: that LGBTQIA writers have stories that can make a differences to all readers, of all sexualities and gender identities.

Nimrod International Journal – Spring/Summer 2014

Stories build bridges in the human community, and this issue of Nimrod explores the rebuilding and re-purposing of many such bridges. As Eilis O’Neal points out in the editor’s note, the focus of this themed issue is work that reimagines “fairy tales, myths, historical events, and family legends, as well as work that reimagines voice, poetic form, art, and even language via translation.” Life reimagined in the presence of death, temporal and spatial reality reimagined in terms of various binaries, old tales adjusted to newer realities, language reconceived with fresh nuances, all this and more is here.
