Magazine Stand :: Radar Poetry – Issue 34

The newest issue of the online quarterly Radar Poetry is a celebration of the winner and finalists of their annual Coniston Prize, an annual award that recognizes an exceptional group of poems by any poet who identifies as a woman writing in English. This year’s judge was Dorianne Laux, and she selected the following:

Finalists: Kenzie Allen, Jessamyn Duckwall, Jenny Grassl, Abi Pollokoff

Radar Poetry 34 features several works from each poet, rounding out the entire issue. Submissions for the next Coniston Prize are open from June 1 – August 1, 2023. The 2022 winner received $1000 and each finalist received $175. In 2022, during the first seven days of contest submissions, Radar Poetry waived fees for BIPOC poets. Publishing two open issues and one prize issue online each year, Radar Poetry is a sensory delight. Each poem is accompanied by visual artwork, and several of the works include high-quality audio of the author reading their works in a clean, easy-to-navigate format. Issue 32 includes poetry by Glen Armstrong, Luke Johnson, Kizzíah Burton, Jenny Grassl, L.J. Free Lecture: How to Publish Your Writing in Literary Journals

The editors of Radar Poetry will be taking part in a one-hour Zoom lecture and Q&A session hosted by Authors Publish. They will be discussing what editors look for, how to organize your submission, and “insider tips” for getting your poems published in literary journals.

This will air live TODAY (June 30, 2021) at 2PM EST. You do need to register to attend. Don’t worry, it’s free. You also will get a a free recording of the full presentation.

Radar Poetry Issue 30 Virtual Launch

Radar Poetry is celebrating the launch of Issue 30 on Thursday, July 15 at 7PM EST via Zoom.

The event features 15 contributors reading their work: J’Anet Danielo, Romana Iorga, Brendan Constantine, Justin Rigamonti, Amy Lerman, Carolyn Supinka, Carolyn Oliver, Robert Krut, Lisa Creech Bledsoe, Melanie Kristeen Robinson, David Donna, Ruth Williams, Amy Dryansky, Ann DeVilbiss, and William Fargason.

Editors and co-founders Rachel Marie Patterson and Dara-Lyn Shrager will be moderating the event.

The Zoom link will be emailed the day of. While it is free, you do need to register via Eventbrite by 6:30 PM EST on July 15 in order to attend.

Join Radar Poetry’s 2-day Virtual January Cleanse Workshop

white crocus on black backgroundOnline literary magazine Radar Poetry will be hosting a two-day virtual intensive workshop, January Cleanse. This will take place via Zoom on January 17 and January 24, 2021 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Seasoned poetry editors Dara-Lyn Shrager and Rachel Marie Patterson will be leading this interactive and dynamic workshop dedicated to guiding writers through a fresh start on their poems. Registration officially opened on November 30. Cost for the workshop is $250—space is limited.

2020 Coniston Prize Winner & Finalists Announced

Laura Villareal is the winner of Radar Poetry‘s 2020 Coniston Prize. Her suite of poems will appear in Issue 28. Judge Ada Limón said of Villareal’s poems, “With language that is alive and piercing with rich sound work and haunting images, these poems are both confident and aching.”

Finalists of this year’s prize were Hillary Berg, Mary Craig, Shannon Elizabeth Hardwick, Jessica Hincapie, Amy Miller, Meredith Stricker, and Sarah Wolfson. You can read their poems in Issue 28 as well.

Radar Poetry is an online literary magazine devoted to publishing poems from both established and emerging writers. The journal was founded in 2013 by Rachel Marie Patterson and Dara-Lyn Shrager. Each issue features pairings of poetry and visual art, selected by the editors and contributors. They seek to feature visual art that interprets, reimagines, or responds to the poem with which it appears.

Issues are published quarterly and the founders and editors also host workshops and retreats.

Each year, Radar Poetry hosts the Coniston Prize. This award is open to female-identifying poets writing in English. The prize is currently accepting submissions through September 1. This year’s judge is Ada Limón. The winning poet receives $1,500 and publication. $10 reading fee.
