University of South Alabama Launches Race and Identity Lecture Series

Screenshot of University of South Alabama Race & Identity Lecture SeriesOn January 27th the English department at the University of South Alabama launched their virtual Race and Identity Lecture Series with USA Writer in Residence Frye Gaillard and Journalist in Residence Cynthia Tucker with “Reflections on Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: A New Perspective of Race in America.” They have three more events scheduled in the series all to be held via Zoom.

This month is Dr. Channette Romero, an associate professor of English at the University of Georgia, who will take part in a conversation on Political Humor in Indigenous Animation on February 24 at 4:30 PM. Next month features Reverend Joseph Brown on Race and Identity in Literature in Culture. In April, Dr. Mudiwa Pettus will present Against Compromise: What Black Rhetorical Education in the Age of Booker T. Washington Teaches Us About Our Current Moment.

The English department offers an MA in English with an emphasis in creative writing and is home to the Stokes Center for Creative Writing.

Doodling for Writers: Rebecca Fish Ewan in Conversation with Donna Talarico

To celebrate the anniversary of its release, they are hosting a virtual event with Rebecca Fish Ewan in conversation with Hippocampus Books publisher Donna Talarico. This will take place February 9 at 7:00 PM EST. There will be an audience Q&A and an optional, fun, no-pressure draw-along.

In this series, HDJ gathers together the best of their writers and artists to read from new works, share passages from classics, and open their hearts to discuss the current pandemic.

The first episodes of the series sees editor Charles Finn discussing life and art making in the time of COVID-19 with Robert Wrigley, Kim Barnes, Brooke Williams, Shann Ray, CMarie Fuhrman, and Joe Wilkins. Desert Nights Rising Stars Writers Conference 2021While we would usually start things off with the beautiful desert weather and the southwestern landscape, things are a little different this year. With rising COVID cases in Arizona, restrictions surrounding travel around the nation, and ongoing orders against large public gatherings, we’ve made the choice to move Desert Nights, Rising Stars 2021 to a completely virtual experience.

The 2021 conference will be conducted online via Zoom from February 18 through 20. Program features will include writing workshops, panel discussions, readings, pitch sessions, book fair, author signings, and roundtable discussions. Genres covered this year include fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, publishing, business of writing, memoir, and young adult.

The Writer’s Hotel Goes Virtual for Fall 2020 Conferences

The Writer’s Hotel‘s three writing conferences will be hosted virtually in October instead of in NYC like normal this year.

The All Fiction Writers Conference will take place October 14-20. The schedule has been redesigned to offer their attendees the very best service possible. Major workshops will be capped at nine people instead of their usual fourteen.
