For 50 years, EVENT has published the very best in contemporary new poetry and prose as one of Western Canada’s longest-running literary magazines. EVENT welcomes submissions written in English from around the world and features emerging and established writers side-by-side. EVENT also prints commissioned illustrations alongside the writing, and each cover features the work of a British Columbia photographer. The newest issue of EVENT print publication of poetry and prose features their 2021 Non-Fiction Contest finalists with introductory commentary by Judge David A. Robertson, who writes, “in the end, that’s what writing stories is all about: connecting. You connect with your readers. They connect with something within themselves or to each other.” The winning entries: 1st Place “Penance” by Cayenne Bradley; 2nd Place “All My Love, Alex” by Vicki McLeod; 3rd Place“One Route, Over and Over” by Nicole Boyce. Also included in this issue is Poetry by Matsuki Masutani, Julian Gunn, Russell Thornton, Laurie D. Graham, Vincent McGillivray, Mark O. Goodwin, Zoe Landale, Kate Marshall Flaherty, Dan MacIsaac, J.G. Chayko, and Erin Kirsh; Fiction by Brian Moore, Joel Fishbane, and Adrian Markle; and numerous reviews of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. EVENT celebrates 50 years of publication with a Notes on Writing anthology, featuring more than 70 personal essays with insights into the joys and struggles of the writer’s life and process, written by notable Canadian writers, including Jane Urquhart, David Bergen, André Alexis, Madeleine Thien, Eden Robinson, Jen Sookfong Lee, Zoe Whittall, Joy Kogawa, Souvankham Thammavongsa, Joshua Whitehead, and many others.

EVENT Virtual Fall Reading Series

Have you been keeping up with EVENT Magazine‘s Fall Reading Series? Each week, they’re introducing one writer, along with a video of each author reading their work from the safety of their homes. So far, they’ve featured John Elizabeth Stintzi, Rose Cullis, and Jane Eaton Hamilton.

Stay safe at your own home and check out the videos on EVENT‘s YouTube channel, or via their blog. A great activity for these rainy, cool fall days we now find ourselves in.

They strive to publish a diversity of voices and literary styles and have published many distinguished writers before and after they gained national or international recognition, i.e. André Alexis, George Bowering, Charles Bukowski, Esi Edugyan, Jack Hodgins, Annabel Lyon, Pablo Neruda, Alden Nowlan, Nino Ricci, Diane Schoemperlen, Carol Shields, Timothy Taylor, and Madeline Thien.

Each year they host a Non-Fiction Contest. The contest awards $3,000 in prizes ($1,500 First Place, $1,000 Second Place, $500 Third Place) plus publication in the Spring/Summer issue. This is the longest-running contest of its kind in Canada. The deadline to enter is October 15 annually.
