Encouraging Young Readers and Writers

NewPages maintains two guides where young readers and writers can find print and online literary magazines to read, places to publish their own works, and legitimate contests: Publications for Young Writers and Writing Contests for Young Writers. Both of these are ad-free resources regularly updated with carefully vetted content, and “young” can be from K to college undergraduate. As long as there is clearly “dedicated” space to a young age group, we will consider listing it here.

Please share these with any young creatives in your lives and with adults who want to encourage youth in the creative arts – parents, teachers, community organization leaders, librarians, etc.

If you know of any great resources for youth that we do not have listed, please contact us. We love to keep these resources alive and growing!

Contest :: 2023 Quills and Keyboard

Newly added to our Contests for Young Writers is the ambitious 2023 Quills and Keyboard contest for high school writers ages 14 and older. Contest organizer Nikhita Thakuria [pictured] recognized the many hurdles teen writers face, exacerbated by the pandemic and the rise of Chat GDP. Setting the standard of encouragement, Quills and Keyboard is open to sixteen different categories of writing with four winners selected in each category. And, eliminating barriers, there is no fee to participate in the contest. The deadline is May 20, 2023, so please help spread the word and encourage young writers in your life to submit their best work.

The 2023 First Lines Announced

If you don’t know about literary magazine The First Line, it is a quarterly print publication in which all pieces start with the same opening line. They also have The Last Line in which all pieces must end with the same line. You can learn more about them here.

They have announced their line-up of first and last lines for 2023. There is no fee to submit. Fiction and nonfiction only. You are not allowed to alter the first or last lines in any way.

All the lawns on Mentone Avenue are mowed on Wednesdays.

November 2022 eLitPak :: 15 Annual Tartt First Fiction Award

The Tartt First Fiction Award from Livingston Press at the University of West Alabama is given annually to a collection of short stories written in English by an American citizen. Writers cannot have already published or be under contract to publish a fiction collection. Winner will receive $1000, plus standard royalty contract, which includes 60 copies of the book.
