Book Review :: Clear by Carys Davies

Apart from the writing, very little in Carys Davies’s novel is actually clear, as she sets her story in two historical upheavals. First, there is the Great Disruption in the Scottish Church, when roughly a third of the ministers rebelled against the system of patronage. Second, the Clearances led to landowners removing entire communities of the poor in rural areas from their homes, as they sought to profit from farming, raising cattle (then mainly sheep), a reshaping of the class and literal landscape that occurred from the mid-eighteenth century well into the nineteenth.

John Ferguson, the main character, finds himself caught in both of these significant changes, as he leaves the Scottish Church to become a member of the Free Church, which doesn’t yet have buildings or an infrastructure or means to pay ministers. Thus, he accepts a job that forces him to travel hundreds of miles to a remote island, one that Davies creates as existing somewhere between Shetland and Norway. He has to remove the one remaining inhabitant, Ivar, of that island for a landlord named Lowrie.

However, before he can present Ivar with a letter informing him of the removal, as John doesn’t speak his language, John falls and seriously injures himself, leading to Ivar’s nursing him back to health, unaware of John and his mission. They develop a deep friendship, as John works to learn Ivar’s language, and Ivar realizes how much he has missed community. While John is there, his wife Mary has begun a journey to bring him home, as she fears for his life, given what has happened to other messengers of such news.

Davies’s novel is brief, and the writing is spare and straightforward, beautiful because of that concision. While she sets her characters in an important historical time, her focus is on their relationships with one another, especially how language can bring people together, even when they can’t quite communicate. She reminds readers that true community is not one without conflict, but where one can develop their true selves, even when those don’t fit the expectations society has devised to keep people in line, especially during times of historic change.

Book Review :: Bone of the Bone by Sarah Smarsh

Sarah Smarsh became well-known for her memoir Heartland, about growing up in Kansas, but she honed her craft as a writer working as a journalist. As she describes it, she’s in the last generation to receive an old-school journalism education, but she has spent her career writing for digital publications, as newspapers slashed their staffs.

This collection gathers together thirty-seven pieces she published over the past decade, almost all of which center around issues of class and/or perceptions of those who live in the Midwest, including her family. Smarsh wants readers to understand what it means to live in poverty in America, including being a member of the working poor. For example, in her piece “Blood Brother,” she talks about her brother, who followed the traditional path to success by going to college, but who ended up selling plasma to be able to pay his bills. In “Rural Route,” she even explores the importance of the postal service to those who live outside urban areas.

The other main idea that runs through her essays are people’s misperceptions of Kansas as “Trump country,” a particularly timely topic. She’s especially critical of those attached to various forms of media who live on either coast of America and portray those in the middle (when they portray them at all) through such a narrow lens.

In “In Celebration of Rare and Exquisite Accuracy from Hollywood,” she praises the show Somebody Somewhere for a realistic portrayal of people in live in Manhattan, Kansas, pointing out that the people behind the show are from the Midwest. In several essays, she reminds readers that college-educated White voters were largely behind President Trump’s election in 2016, not the supposedly uneducated rural White voters who received most of the blame.

Near the end of her collection, she also includes three more personal essays about when she considered running for public office; her husband; and her mother. Overall, the primary focus of the book is on “the unseen,” to whom she dedicates the collection. She helps readers see them in all their humanity, the goal of any good writer.

Book Review :: Soldier Sailor by Claire Kilroy

Soldier Sailor, Claire Kilroy’s most recent novel, is clear-eyed in its portrayal of motherhood, especially during the challenging first few years. The mother in this work—known only as Soldier—addresses her son—the Sailor of the title—throughout, explaining to him why she behaved the way she did when he was younger. She tells him that she used to be a different person, and she will be a different person again, but the sleep deprivation and constant demands of raising a young child have changed her, especially in her inability to think clearly.

She could be different if her husband helped with any aspect of her life, whether that’s directly taking care of their son or cooking dinner or doing absolutely anything to make her days easier. Not only does he not help her, he seems oblivious to her feelings and her state of being, and he definitely doesn’t notice the change their marriage has undergone.

Kilroy provides a contrast to Soldier’s husband in a friend she runs into at the playground, somebody who knew her before she had a son, a man who’s taking care of his three children, while his wife works as a doctor. Through that juxtaposition, the reader can clearly see that Kilroy isn’t critiquing men, in general, but the vast majority of them who do little to nothing to participate in the care of their children.

Her main focus, though, is simply on the realities of being a mother, one day after another, with all of the constant demands and the lack of appreciation. That focus is more than enough and more than needed.

Book Review :: Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward

Let Us Descend, Jesmyn Ward’s latest novel, like other neo-slave narratives—Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad, Toni Morrison’s Beloved, and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Water Dancer— uses the mystical and the magical in her portrayal of slavery. Annis is separated from her mother and sold further South into even more brutal conditions. One way she survives is by drawing on the spirits of wind, water, and earth, as well as her ancestors. However, Ward doesn’t use these supernatural elements to make Annis’ existence easier; in fact, Annis often argues with these spirits about what they have done and where they have failed her or her family. Annis must ultimately rely on herself and those around her in order to survive and find a way to exist in a brutal system that consistently tries to break every bond she has, including the one with herself. Ward focuses more on the psychological and emotional effects of slavery than she does the physical abuse, though that’s certainly present. She is more concerned with Annis’ inner life and her relationships with her family and others who are enslaved than she is with recreating the brutality of the system. She ultimately wants to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit rather than relying on the supernatural spirits to provide an unrealistic survival for Annis.
