Publisher’s description: New Madrid has featured the work of Sherman Alexie, Jericho Brown, Holly Goddard Jones, Kelle Groom, Philip Garrison, Karen An-Hwei Lee, Beth Lordan, William Trowbridge, Avra Wing, and many more established and emerging writers. It is the official journal of the low-residency MFA program at Murray State University. We take our name (accent on the first syllable of the second word) from the New Madrid seismic zone, which falls within the central Mississippi Valley and extends through western Kentucky, and we celebrate our roots in the Ohio River Valley. At the same time, we strive to be a journal of national consequence.
The winter issue, published in January, is always a special issue; the summer issue, published in July, is always an open issue. Special issues have focused on such themes as Mexico in the Heartland, Intelligent Design, The Dynamics of Poverty and Wealth, Water, and Japan in America, America in Japan. We accept submissions each year from August 15 to October 15, and from January 15 to March 15.
