Publisher’s description: Collateral is an online literary journal publishing literary and visual art concerned with the impact of violent conflict and military service beyond the combat zone. Many great journals seek stories centered in combat, but Collateral creates a platform for the lasting effects of war outside of combat zones. We are interested in the complex perspectives of military family members, veterans, civilians, refugees, immigrants, survivors, activists, teachers, mental health workers, witnesses, and more. We especially encourage submissions from BIPOC, women, LGBTQ+, and artists creating within groups that have been historically marginalized by the majority. We charge no fees and read year-round, but the deadline for our spring issue is March 1, and the deadline for fall is September 1, annually. We publish twice a year, in May and November.
Collateral’s editors facilitate virtual & local readings and workshops in several cities across the country. Our masthead is entirely volunteer. We are women, nonbinary, two-spirit, veterans and civilians whose lives are directly and indirectly impacted by military life. Past contributors include Marilyn Nelson, Humaira Abid, Jehanne Dubrow, Rena Priest, Juan J. Morales, B.A. Van Sise, Anita Lakshmi Powell, Eric J. Garcia, and more.
