University of Alabama
The program leading to the master of fine arts (MFA) degree in creative writing is a studio/academic course of study, designed to accommodate imaginative and intellectual diversity. All of our students are fully funded.
University of Alabama at Birmingham
Our program offers themes in Literature, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric and Composition. Students pursuing creative writing take a series of workshop classes to develop their skills as poets or writers of fiction or creative nonfiction. In creative writing workshops, the content of the course is literally generated by the students themselves.

The MFA in Creative Writing at Mount Saint Mary's University is an artist-training program for students who want to write professionally across multiple genres. Class sessions meet every other weekend at the Doheny Campus in Downtown Los Angeles, making it ideal for busy working professionals. The program offers bilingual Spanish/English courses and integrates the humanities into the course of study, reflecting a commitment to intellectual rigor and liberal arts as the cornerstone of human understanding. The National University MFA program is a completely online program with no residency requirement. Workshop classes are conducted in electronic classrooms with fellow writers from around the country and the world.
Otis College of Art and Design

Our 2 1/2-year program offers students a personalized learning experience with access to San Francisco’s vital literary community. Thesis instruction provides one-on-one mentoring with faculty for two semesters. The Reading Series brings acclaimed writers to campus. The USC PhD in Creative Writing & Literature program is one of the few dual PhD programs in the country that weaves the disciplines of literature and creative work into a single educational experience.

Throughout these changes, we remain writers committed to our craft and our teaching. The Intermedia Art, Writing and Performance (IAWP) unit is an interdisciplinary digital arts and humanities research unit with a practice-based PhD.

DU’s program in creative writing is one of the only writing programs in the country that focuses exclusively on doctoral study. All of the University of Denver’s graduate students in Creative Writing are PhD students.

Western Connecticut State University
In our first 10 years as the only low-residency MFA program in which students study both a creative genre and a practical field, our students have published over 40 books and chapbooks and have an 87% success rate for book publication, full-time employment in academia or writing careers, and fellowship programs. Unlike most other low-res programs, we typically offer fully funded graduate assistantships for six to eight students who are able to spend time on campus and earn hands-on experience in teaching, writing, and editorial positions.

Founded in 1980, the American University’s MFA Program in Creative Writing, offered through the Department of Literature, is a 48-semester-hour program that may be completed in two years.

This program of study is designed to give students the opportunity to specialize in one of four areas of concentration, Literary Studies in English, Creative Writing, Composition & Rhetoric, and Cultural Studies in Asia/Pacific, while requiring that they do approximately half of their course work in other subject areas.
Boise State University
The MFA Program in Creative Writing offers degree tracks in fiction and poetry, emphasizing the art and craft of literary writing and concentrating on the student’s written work.

Northwestern University Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences
This new and distinctive program offers intimate classes; the opportunity to pursue both creative and critical writing; close mentorship by renowned faculty in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction; and three fully supported years in which to grow as writers and complete a book-length creative project. Our curriculum gives students time to deepen both their creative writing and their study of literature. Students will receive full financial support for three academic years and two summers. Both degrees—the MFA in Creative Writing and the MA in English—are awarded simultaneously at graduation.
Ours is a small program informed by Roosevelt University’s social justice mission and focused on narrative and the lyric essay. Workshops are led by professors equally attuned to traditional forms and the experimental, resulting in a tight community of writers committed to practicing our craft in an urban environment.
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
The two-year Master of Fine Arts in Writing (MFAW) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) distinguishes itself from more conventional writing programs in that it both questions typical genre distinctions and nurtures traditional writing approaches. MFAW students are immersed in an arts environment within the nation’s second-highest rated MFA program, encouraging them to participate in an active community of artists, writers, and scholars. Our program is a flexible, innovative, two-year program that encourages cross-genre study through graduate workshops and culminates in a creative project. The MFA is a 36-hour studio MFA that includes ten three-credit courses and six hours of formal thesis work with an advisor. We offer programs in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, as well as electives in screenwriting, young adult fiction, poetic form, literary editing and publishing, and teaching creative writing. The MFA is a two-year limited-residency program consisting of two summer residences in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a winter residency that alternates between New York and Toronto.

The Department of English at UNB offers six graduate programs, including a PhD and MA in English with a focus on creative writing. Full-time students in all programs are eligible to be considered for funding from the UNB Faculty of Arts, which distributes funding on a competitive basis to the faculty's graduate students, and for funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
