Publisher's description: Mistake House offers space to celebrate conceptually and aesthetically inventive work from diverse voices at every stage of professional development. The name honors The Mistake House, an eclectic cottage by architect Bernard Maybeck on the Principia College campus in April 1931 to experiment with building techniques for the construction of the Maybeck buildings that form the architectural heart of Principia’s campus. Described as a “peculiar confection of constructional ideas” by architectural historian Robert M. Craig, the cottage embodies Maybeck’s eccentric pragmatism and dedication to the idea of process. For Mistake House Magazine, the tiny building serves as an icon, a reference point, an instructional guide, and an example of playful risk-taking.

The professional section, Soap Bubble Set, showcases by invitation one visual artist and one writer. Named after an assemblage by the well-known modernist sculptor and filmmaker, Joseph Cornell, Soap Bubble Set evokes the transient quality of soap bubbles, childhood play and imagination, the ever-changing nature of the artistic and literary world, and contemplation of the cosmos. This section has received recognition such as the reference to poet Benjamin Garcia’s 2022 interview in the Poetry Foundation’s Harriet blog.

Mistake House Magazine, edited by undergraduates at Principia College, publishes fiction and poetry by students in graduate or undergraduate programs worldwide. We seek inventive work that speaks to the heart in a complex global context, including work expressive of documentary poetics.
