Publisher's description: Since October 2005, Press 53 has been finding and sharing remarkable voices. We do not have an open submission period; our editors actively scout writers by reading journals and magazines, including our own quarterly journal, Prime Number Magazine, and by attending conferences, festivals, and readings. We are looking for authors who are actively involved in the literary community by widely publishing individual pieces and by physically connecting with readers and other writers. We also discover and publish writers at any level by way of our annual writing competitions. We publish a wide range of poetry and short fiction, but we stay away from anything overtly political or religious (writing that is trying to sell something). We’ve published over 100 writers from 33 states, 60 percent of whom are women, by no design other than the women are delivering a rewarding experience. We prefer stories and poems that approach issues from the simple to complex with straightforward language.
Our 200 titles have earned us more than 60 awards, including the Mississippi Institute of Arts & Letters Award for Fiction, the Library of Virginia Award for Fiction, and the International Book Award for Poetry. Some of our authors include Pinckney Benedict, Kelly Cherry, David Jauss, Cathy Smith Bowers, Taylor Brown, Terri Kirby Erickson, Yahia Lababidi, Rebecca Foust, Richard Garcia, Ginger Murchison, Seth Michelson, Shivani Mehta, Joseph Mills, and Hedy Habra.
