Publisher’s Description: Fugue, a premier literary magazine, housed at the University of Idaho, has been publishing richly musical work since 1990. Originally, Fugue was in a very modest saddle-back format under the founding editorship of J.C. Hendee. Fugue now publishes two issues a year (winter and summer) running around one hundred to two hundred pages each, filled with poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and creative literary essays. Best American Essays and the Pushcart Prize have recognized work published in Fugue.
Since our earlier days, Fugue has begun to focus on feature writers in some issues, usually the work of visiting writers. Poets Pattiann Rogers and Stephen Dobyns were the first to be so distinguished; others have included Kathy Acker, Samuel R. Delaney, Raymond Federman, Brenda Hillman, Stephen Dunn, Sharon Olds, Virgil Suarez, Dean Young, W.S. Merwin, Campbell McGrath, Philip Levine, David Schloss, Natasha Trethewey, and Robert Wrigley. We have also showcased the fiction of Steve Almond, Robert Boswell, and Padgett Powell, as well as the non-fiction of Melanie Rae Thon (Pushcart Prize) and John Balaban.
Also, we will host Fugue's Annual Contest in Poetry and Prose for 2010. This year, we're reading for the categories of fiction and poetry. Deadline is May 1, 2010. 2011 contest will read for poetry and nonfiction. First prize recipients receive $1,000 and publication. Reading fee is $20, and includes a one year subscription to Fugue. Recent issues:
Issue 36, Winter/Spring 2009 features an interview with Anthony Doerr, a nonfiction submission by Michael Perry, a story about owning your own serial killer, an essay reflecting on a past obsession with Depeche Mode, and poems that will make you actually feel fond of winter.
Issue 35, Summer/Fall 2008 Read our contest winners for Fugue's Seventh Annual Contest judged by Mark Halliday (poetry) and Ann Pancake (fiction). Also in this issue (35, Summer/Fall 2008): an interview with Jo Ann Beard and stories about the Donkey-Man, the danger of sharing bagels with interns, and Guan Hanqin, 13th century poet, proves he's still hip.
