Political Issue, Fall 2008
Seeking forward-looking political writing. Emphasis on forward-thinking, projections of trends and counter trends (no utopias or dystopias). With nonfiction, NO rehashes of old issues, but for fresh ideas. Solutions versus deconstruction. With fiction, exploration of history if it illuminates the present political condition and the implications for the future. Deadline June 1.

Thema

The premise given must be an integral part of the plot, not necessarily the central theme but not merely incidental. Upcoming deadlines/themes: Unprepared for adventure, July 1 and In Kay’s Kitchen, November 1. Accept fewer than 20 double-spaced pages of prose, 3-5 poems and black and white illustrations. 

New Letters

Publised quarterly by the University of Missouri-Kansas City, this issue (v74n2) features Syrian poet Abed Ismael, six stories by Robert Olen Butler, an interview with Margot Livesey, and an essay by Inge Genefke. Also included are new writings from Marie Etienne, John Knoepfle, Adrian C. Louis, and the 2008 New Letters Literary Award Winners.

Creative Nonfiction

Becoming a Doctor (publisher W.W. Norton). Creative Nonfiction seeks essays from physicians and therapists about the experience of becoming a doctor. Possible topics include periods of growth and enlightenment, moments of transition, or incidents of doubt, disappointment or disillusionment. Essays 3,000-4,000 words, must be vivid and dramatic, with a strong and compelling narrative. Postmark deadline May 31.

RATTLE

Issue #30 includes a tribute section featuring poetry written by Cowboy/Western poets. Also want a series of short essays on different aspects of Cowboy/Western poetry, or a longer introduction to the history of its literary tradition. Deadline August 1. The Apple Valley Review

A biannual (spring/fall) online literary journal featuring a collection of beautifully crafted poetry, short fiction, and essays. All work published during the calendar year is considered for the annual Apple Valley Review Editor’s Prize. In 2006 and 2007, the prize was $100 and a gift of a book of poetry or fiction.

Raving Dove

An online literary journal dedicated to sharing thought-provoking writing, photography, and art that opposes the use of violence as conflict resolution, and embraces the intrinsic themes of peace and human rights. Published in February, June, and October, Raving Dove welcomes original poetry, nonfiction essays, fiction, photography, and art.

New Madrid

Winter 2009 theme issue: "Intelligent Design": the legacy of Darwin, the impact of the evolution-vs.-creationism debate on the public schools, the cosmological argument, etc. Also works that let their structures show: poems in received forms or nonce forms, fiction and non-fiction utilizing unorthodox narrative devices (for example, frames within frames), works that consider design issues from the perspective of other disciplines (for example, architecture, quilting, graphic arts, the natural sciences, etc.). Open Submissions for The Versus Anthology a collection of works based on the theme of pitting iconic characters or forces against one another (for example, “Jesus VS Thor” or “Adolph Hitler VS Grendel”). Versus is edited by Josh Woods and is set for release in the spring of 2009 by Press 53.
