Miscarriage Anthology: Catalyst Book Press seeks literary essays telling personal stories of miscarriage, in particular emotional and spiritual ramifications of miscarriage or the transformations that occurred in people’s lives as a result of undergoing or observing a miscarriage.  In response to the current world economic crisis, New Madrid will dedicate its Winter 2010 issue to the dynamics of poverty and wealth: “For Richer, for Poorer.” Submissions that address cultures of poverty and wealth, psychologies of poverty and wealth, theories of poverty and wealth, concepts of relative poverty and relative wealth, cycles of poverty and wealth, etc. Work that takes up such issues as life expectancy, literacy, food security, income disparity, wealth distribution and voluntary poverty. Miranda Literary Magazine is beginning a new phase in its print endeavor and would like to invite writers to submit to anthology projects. Each project is based around a topic or a concept that will be the focus of the anthology; guest editors will help with the selection of the work and write an introduction. Anthologies will be in print form, published through Skinny Toe Press – the creators of Miranda Literary Magazine. The first anthology will be “The Sea.” Submit poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, essays, interviews, book reviews, and other writing where the ocean plays a significant role. June 30

 

Shenandoah: The Washington and Lee University Review has issued a call for essays, poems, short stories, reviews, photographs and other artwork about, related to or in honor of the fiction and life of Flannery O’Connor. The work is to be published in a special issue celebrating the journal’s 60th anniversary. Deadline for submissions is October 1, 2009. A prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the best O’Connor-related work published in the issue, which is planned for Fall, 2010. The New Quarterly is looking for lists of all kinds: fiction, poetry, inventories and catalogues, found lists, shopping lists, to-do lists, and any other kind of lists you might like to share. The Lists Issue will be guest-edited by Diane Schoemperlen. Deadline: June 30

 

Earth Island Journal is stories that anticipate environmental concerns before they become pressing problems, stories that scan the horizon for the next big issue. Whenever possible, seek to tell the stories of individuals and communities who are successfully defending and restoring the Earth. On-the-ground reports from outside North America are especially welcomed. Writers paid 20 cents/word for shorter dispatches (1,200-1,500 words) and for longer investigative features (2,500-3,000 words).

 

The Fertile Source accepts photos, artwork, literary essays, poems, and fiction on fertility-related themes. We also accept book and magazine reviews on fertility-related publications, and will consider interviews with fertility, infertility, and adoption specialists. "Fertility-related themes” include infertility, abortion, miscarriage, and adoption as well as childbirth, pregnancy, birth control, sex, postpartum depression, breastfeeding, and becoming a parent.
