Students join an extraordinarily warm community every summer and winter for an intensive ten-day residency that initiates an independent semester of apprenticeship completed off-site through correspondence with a mentor. Students work with a mixture of new and returning faculty, working one-on-one with a different mentor within their discipline throughout each residency and off-campus period. Located in central Appalachia, the program welcomes and fosters writing that explores place and identity, though that emphasis is secondary to fostering excellence in all writing. Interested students may substitute a residency in Ireland for one campus residency. Faculty-student ratio never exceeds 1 to 4.

The University of Texas at Austin offers two separate degrees in creative writing: the Master of Arts degree and the Master of Fine Arts Degree. The English Department administers the M.A.; the Michener Center for Writers administers the M.F.A.. In the Goddard College Creative Writing program, students work with faculty advisors to develop rigorous individualized study plans for finding and strengthening their creative voices and creative professional lives. The first low-residency writing program, the Goddard MFA supports students writing fiction, poetry, memoir, plays, screenplays, graphic novel scripts, and nonfiction. The faculty are professional, working authors and also devoted, effective teachers. Students can gain editing experience with the student-run Pitkin Review literary journal, and residencies include publishing workshops. Established in 1981, the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in Writing program was one of the first low-residency programs in the country. Founded in 2001, West Virginia University’s MFA Program is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, along the Monongahela River. Our program offers specializations in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Workshop sizes are always small, usually capped at twelve students.In addition to taking five workshops, including one out of genre, students work one-on-one with faculty mentors in preparing their theses: a book-length work of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. Students take additional courses in editing, professional writing, and literature, receive training in pedagogy, and teach composition and creative writing. Our program is home to the Cheat River Review, and we offer opportunities for outreach via the Appalachian Prison Book Project, the Bolton Writing Workshops, and partnerships with middle schools and senior citizen "lifelong learners."

Students join an extraordinarily warm community every summer and winter for an intensive ten-day residency that initiates an independent semester of apprenticeship completed off-site through correspondence with a mentor. Located in central Appalachia, the program welcomes and fosters writing that explores place and identity, though that emphasis is secondary to fostering excellence in all writing.
