Program description: The Master of Fine Arts in Writing, Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children & Young Adults, and Master of Fine Arts in Writing & Publishing programs are designed for students with a serious interest in developing professional skills in writing poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and writing for young readers. VCFA’s internationally acclaimed writers and highly dedicated teachers attract students from all corners of the world to the rigorous and uniquely supportive community.
An intensive 10-day residency in Vermont—or optional overseas residency in Puerto Rico and Slovenia (MFAW) or Bath, England (WCYA)—challenges and inspires students for the 6-month study ahead. While focusing on essential topics for a developing writer—contemporary letters, the literary tradition, techniques of writing, and critical analysis—students engage in four semesters of study focused on their individual interests, such as emerging literary forms, exploration of the intersection of the literary and visual arts, translation (MFAW), or diversity in children’s literature (WCYA).
VCFA’s new W&P program allows students a residential experience at the college while learning the art of writing, and also the art of publishing. Students learn from some of the top writers in the country, along with giants in the field of book publishing. Internships in the second year form a critical aspect of the learning process. Dual-Genre, Dual-Program, and several Postgraduate options are available.
VCFA offers many substantial scholarships to both new and continuing students, including publisher-sponsored funds with right of first-refusal options (MFWC). See the website for all award details recognizing merit, need, diversity, and community leadership.
