Publisher's description: Founder Donna Talarico first dreamed of Hippocampus Magazine while she was working on her MFA in creative writing at Wilkes University. Focusing on her own thesis, the magazine didn't officially launch until 2011. Donna’s vision was to create not just a literary magazine filled with fresh memoir excerpts and memorable essays, but also to develop a venue to educate and inform those interested in reading and writing creative nonfiction. Adding craft articles, book reviews, and interviews would add value to Hippocampus Magazine. A mix of timely and timelessness.
The hippocampus is what makes enjoying great memoir possible because, without it, memories would not exist. The hippocampus is the sea-horse-shaped part of the brain where long-term memories are formed (hence our logo!). What a more fitting name for an online magazine committed to drawing on personal memories! When we introduced our annual conference for creative nonfiction writers in 2015, we chose a name that played off our title and gave a nod to summer camp. In 2016, we announced the lauch of our small press division, Books by Hippocampus.
Our three-fold mission remains to entertain by providing fresh, enjoyable creative nonfiction form emerging and established writers; educate by helping writers inmprove their craft and recommend further reading related to the genre; and to engage by encouraging conversations between reader and writer on our site and beyond.
We nominate our stories, annually, for prestigious awards and other literary honors such as the Pushcart Prize, Best of the Net, and Best American Essays. We promote individual stories throughout the duration of each issue, as well as continue to keep up with and support our family of contributors.
