Program description: Vermont College of Fine Arts is home to three MFA programs in writing: the Master of Fine Arts in Writing, Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children & Young Adults, and Master of Fine Arts in Writing & Publishing. These programs are designed for students with a serious interest in deepening their craft and developing professional skills in writing. VCFA’s internationally acclaimed writing faculty are also committed and passionate teachers and mentors. We have been called the “best of the best,” and were among the first to develop the low-residency model for graduate study. Our programs are student-centered, immersive learning experiences, grounded in our rigorous writing pedagogy, shaped by a supportive and engaged writing community.
Low-residency programs begin with an intensive 10-day residency in Vermont—or optional overseas residency in Puerto Rico and Slovenia (MFAW) or Bath, England (WCYA)—that challenges and inspires students in the context of a writing community in advance of the 6-month semester, when students work intensively under the guidance of a faculty mentor. While focusing on essential topics for a developing writer—contemporary letters, the literary tradition, craft and critical analysis—students engage in four semesters of study focused on their individual interests, including translation (MFAW), or diversity in children’s literature (WCYA). Low-residency programs offer Dual-Genre, Dual Program and Post-Graduate options.
VCFA’s new residential W&P program allows students a fully on campus experience while studying both the art of writing and the art of publishing. Together with workshops and craft seminars, editorial work and internships form a critical aspect of the learning process.
VCFA offers many substantial scholarships to both new and continuing students. See the website for more information on our numerous need and merit-based awards.
VCFA is where writers have come to deepen their craft through intense literary mentorship and supportive community for more than 35 years. Our groundbreaking MFA programs are innovative, immersive, rigorous, and transforming.
