Program description: The MFA in Creative Writing at Mount Saint Mary's University is an artist-training program for students who want to write professionally across multiple genres. The program integrates the humanities into the course of study, reflecting a commitment to intellectual rigor and liberal arts as the cornerstone of human understanding. Courses are demanding, disciplined, and comprehensive.
Faculty place a premium on helping students into their professional careers through continued mentoring and preparing them for the publication market. Our professors have a long track record of helping students to national and international literary prizes and book-length publications. Whatever your career path, our job is to help you write stories, novels, plays, poems, or screenplays, at the highest level, and get them into print or staged before an appreciative public.
Class sessions meet every other weekend at the Doheny Campus in Downtown Los Angeles. The Weekend format is an innovative approach to adult learning that allows busy professionals to balance school, career, and family responsibilities. Courses are also available online for those wishing to join the program from distant parts of the world. Starting fall 2016, the MFA program will also begin to offer bilingual Spanish/English courses. Students will have the opportunity to write their thesis projects in either language.
Combining humanistic depth, intellectual rigor, multicultural and bilingual study, cross-training in multiple genres, and a flexible weekend and online format is what makes our MFA in Creative Writing stand apart. We encourage you to come study with us, a gem right in the heart of Los Angeles.
