Program Description: The Creative Writing Department offers Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry; a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Fiction Writing; and minors in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. As an undergraduate, you’ll explore the history of your chosen genre within an extraordinary, collaborative learning environment. Our programs are led by nationally and internationally known faculty members who teach, live, and write in one of the most celebrated literary and artistic cities in the world. We offer studio/academic programs in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. Each program emphasizes students' own writing and craft (in workshops and craft seminars), along with possibilities for cross-genre writing, and each program is balanced with the study of literature, form, and theory. Our intensive graduate programs are small, vibrant and supportive communities for growing as a student, honing your craft as a writer, and obtaining experience as an educator.
MFA Fiction: The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing – Fiction is a vibrant program taught by award-winning faculty and prestigious visiting writers who bring cultural, aesthetic, and pedagogic diversity into the classroom. Our courses, designed and continuously developed with our students' needs in mind, provide crucial literary foundations, as well as the tools to break free from those foundations.
MFA Nonfiction: Students in Columbia's three-year Master of Fine Arts in Nonfiction gain a broad sense of the changing shape of nonfiction over time and a vivid awareness of nonfiction in the present cultural landscape. The Nonfiction MFA is a small, intimate program that ensures close attention from experienced, well-published faculty as you work in a broad range of nonfiction and hybrid forms.
MFA Poetry: Developed by poets for poets, the Master of Fine Arts in Poetry is a small, intimate graduate experience that encompasses a wide breadth of poetic traditions. The two-year program fosters close working relationships with our accomplished, award-winning faculty and a supportive environment in which to grow as a poet and as a student of poetry.
BA Fiction: Columbia's Fiction major is truly unequaled in undergraduate education. The program covers the genres and subgenres of fiction and offers a variety of critical reading and writing classes. Electives in science fiction, children's writing, creative nonfiction and publishing are available to match your interests. Our graduates have published widely in all of these areas and possess the skills necessary to obtain jobs in a wide range of communications-related fields.
BFA Fiction: The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fiction provides intensive writing instruction with an equally strong liberal arts foundation from Columbia's Liberal Arts and Sciences Core Curriculum. This program particularly suits students planning graduate study in creative writing or employment in writing-related professions.
BA Nonfiction: The Nonfiction major introduces you to a variety of nonfiction forms, pushing you to explore the history of the genre and write prose that is personal and original. You'll study with some of the most respected writers in the genre and join a vibrant community that can help you transition to a publishing career or graduate studies.
BA Poetry: As a Poetry student at Columbia, you'll gain creative, critical and aesthetic insights that will propel your artistic growth and your understanding of the medium itself. You'll achieve this through a sequence of poetry workshops, poetry literature classes, hybrid studio/craft seminars, a poetry reading series and publishing your work in our nationally distributed, student-edited poetry magazine, Columbia Poetry Review.
