It was founded in 2002 to address the need for an alternative scholarly, academic press attentive to emergent ideas and forms while maintaining the highest possible standards of quality, credibility, and integrity.
The Press is managed by scholars and specialists in their respective fields, presently covering seventeen book series, from initial peer review through production, distribution, and marketing. There are presently over 500 Parlor Press authors and another 75 developing new projects. Parlor Press books have won numerous national awards as the best books in their respective fields. Our outstanding poetry series, Free Verse Editions, has released 58 titles and includes poets who have received the National Book Critic’s Circle Award, Griffin Poetry Prize, the PEN USA Award, and more. Parlor Press sponsors the New Measure Poetry Prize, which has been awarded each year since 2011.
As of March 2018, Parlor Press had published 275 titles, each in multiple formats. The Press also manages and supports production for the following respected journals: WPA: Writing Program Administration, Community Literacy Journal, Composition Studies, PreText, JAEPL: Journal for Expanded Perspectives on Learning, KB Journal (Kenneth Burke), WAC Journal, and The Writing Instructor. In 2016 and 2018, Parlor Press served as the official publisher of the Rhetoric Society of America. It has ongoing partnerships with the WAC Clearinghouse, New City Community Press, Inkshed, and Free Verse: A Journal of Contemporary Poetry & Poetics.
