Publisher's description: At Jacar Press we believe that writers should be treated with respect and dignity. Writers and publishers should be allies, not antagonists. A writer’s job is to witness the world, and share that witness. A publisher’s job is to bring that work to readers. We never ask our writers to pre-sell copies, host crowdfunding drives, or contribute any financial support towards publishing their work. We work hard to arrange readings and workshop opportunities for those we publish. We publish chapbooks, full-length collections, and anthologies in a variety of formats, from digital to hand letterpress. We work with actual printers and have a professional graphic designer on staff.
Jacar Press also believes that the business of writing should be a positive force in communities. We offer free and low-cost writing workshops in under-served communities, and for particular needs. We donate proceeds from all out books to progressive causes (listed on our site).
Jacar Press publishes an award-winning online magazine, One. There is no fee to submit. Our contributors have included poets who have won the Pulitzer Prize, a MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant, been National Book Award finalists. Writers from Nigeria, Lebanon, Ireland, Costa Rica, India, Scotland, England, Turkey, Armenia the U.S. and elsewhere.
In addition to publishing books, a magazine and serving communities, Jacar Press offers low-cost online classes for writers, as well as Community-based Writing Workshops featuring internationally celebrated writers like Lynn Emanuel, Patricia Spears Jones, Dorianne Laux, Li-Young Lee, Marilyn Nelson and others.
