Publisher’s Description: Poetry International has been called “America’s most exciting and eclectic poetry annual.” Each issue offers a wide range of poetry from the U.S. and around the world, and includes a special feature on a different national poetry. Past issues of PI have surveyed the new poetry of Russia, Israel, Vietnam, and Cuba. A special double-issue (7/8) featured English Language Poetry from the US, Canada, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, England and Ireland. The artwork in each issue is usually related to the special feature, and the magazine’s striking covers have made it a sought after collectible. Each issue includes a mix of well-established poets and newcomers, as well as a substantial book review section.
Editor Fred Moramarco sees the journal’s mission as developing a larger audience for world poetry and demonstrating that poetry has a great deal to tell us about our collective inner lives and how we live today. The magazine publishes accessible poems, not obscure and cliquish poetry, but rather “poetry that matters.” Poets published in recent issues include the late William Matthews, John Ashbery, Adrienne Rich, Gerald Stern, Derek Walcott, Kim Addonizio, Kofi Anyidoho, Edwin Thumboo, Jill Jones, Gary Geddes, Alan Jenkins, John Burnside, Seamus Heaney, Mary O’Donnell, Marilyn Hacker, Philip Levine, Wanda Coleman, and many more.
