Publisher’s Description: Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz & Literature publishes jazz-related poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. In fact, it remains the only literary publication in the country with that thematic focus.
The mission of Brilliant Corners is to present a range of literature inspired by jazz and to challenge some of the stereotypical responses to jazz-related literature. We are not interested, for example, in sloppy hipster jargon or work that relies on musical accompaniment to validate the writing.
Our color covers feature a range of jazz-related art, from woven portraits of musicians to abstract acrylic canvases, and each issue begins with “A Note on the Cover Art,” usually written by the artist. In addition to poems and prose inspired by jazz, each issue includes a lengthy interview with a writer whose work has been significantly informed by the music.
Work first appearing in Brilliant Corners has been reprinted in over fifty book publications and anthologies, including Best American Poetry. Although our contributors include some of the most distinguished writers in the country—such as winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award—the journal also includes work by first-time authors, many of whom have later become well known.
