Small Press Review calls Big Muddy “a captivating collection.” Big Muddy has been rollin’ since 2000, publishing an interdisciplinary selection of creative nonfiction essays, history, poetry, fiction, biography, environmental sciences, industry/business, photography, music, and art in a perfect-bound, color-cover format. While topics related to the Mississippi River Valley are always encouraged, a direct relation to the area is not necessary; after all, most of the continent leads in one way or another to the Big River Road. The magazine also includes short (300-word) reviews of predominantly independent and university-press books.

Our past contributors include emerging writers who deserve to be heard, as well as well-known voices such as that of Colleen McElroy, Stephen Graham Jones, Virgil Suarez, Jim Elledge, Elaine Fowler Palencia, Ryan G. Van Cleave, David Radavitch, and Richard Neuman. Big Muddy sponsors two annual fiction contests: the Mighty River Short Story contest and the Wilda Hearne Flash Fiction contest.
